GURU PURNIMA CELEBRATION @ Adeline Yoga

SUNDAY, JULY 21ST FROM 9 – 10:45 AM PT ON ZOOM

WITH HEATHER HAXO PHILLIPS

Guru Purnima is a particularly auspicious time to express gratitude for spiritual teachers and holy beings that have positively affected us. To call someone a Guru is very special indeed. The term indicates the weight of their words which penetrate straight to your heart, and honors their counsel which serves as a literal beacon of light guiding you on your spiritual path.

Guru Purnima is celebrated in India and other countries as a time for spiritual momentum, to honor those who share their wisdom with us. Held on the brightest full moon of the year, Guru Purnima is reminding us of the wisdom and guidance that the Guru shines on us all.

This special class will include:

  • Special chants that honor the Guru, ensure a successful student-teacher relationship and express gratitude for the full illumination of Purnima.

  • All-Levels asana practice using Light on Yoga as our guide

  • Stories about BKS Iyengar

  • Guidance about how to celebrate Guru Purnima on your own throughout the day

The Vertical Core w/Jaki Nett

During this 3-hour workshop, we will delve into the actions of the adductor muscles along with the muscles of the thigh in close proximity. The primary muscles of the vertical core are the inner thigh muscles. These adductor muscles bring stabilization to the pelvis and move the thighs back towards midline.

A handout will aid in understanding the material covered in this workshop and the asanas practiced in the workshop will foster the learning experience.

Can we talk pelvic floor? Prolapsed organs? Incontinence? Pelvic pain?

A healthy pelvic floor is not too loose or too tight. It is strong, stable and flexible. Many factors may contribute to an unhealthy pelvic region: poor postural habits, scoliosis, a perpetually tucked pelvis, constipation, aging, child birth and shallow breathing are among them. Yoga can improve pelvic floor dysfunction.

Let’s create a nurturing space to explore these issues together!

INTRODUCTION TO PRANAYAMA: Studying Our Life Energy with Victoria Austin

INTRODUCTION TO PRANAYAMA: Studying Our Life Energy with Victoria Austin

What is the relationship between breath and mind? How do we cultivate our ability to breathe and live in a way that gives life?

When we breathe consciously, the universe's eternal gift of life (prana) becomes accessible and meaningful for us. We absorb how to sensitively attend to energies of body and mind. The life of our mind (citta) responsively grows in wisdom. Intimate communication with our internal processes and universal energy grows when we practice pranayama, the fourth limb of yoga.

This deeply nourishing four-week class introduces the practitioner to B.K.S. Iyengar's preparatory course of pranayama. We will develop our skill in:

  • Savasana as a form of concentration and meditation

  • Reclining postures to respond to a wide range of needs

  • Concise home practice to start or end the day

  • The seated postures that work best for us

  • Hearing advice from ancient sages for spaciousness and serenity in our lives today

Prerequisite: Six months' asana study with a qualified teacher; willingness to be with ourselves.

Enhance Your Pranayama Practice
for Intermediate Practitioners
with Heather Haxo Phillips

Three Friday mornings in 2020: December 4, 11 and 18
7 – 8 am PST

Pranayama is a deeply transformative practice on all levels, physical and emotional. It is your daily opportunity to connect with your embodiment, taking a dip into the deep quiet and expansiveness inside yourself. Being with a community of people committed to the same endeavor is a valuable opportunity to learn techniques and approaches that can inspire and direct your practice.

The foundation for pranayama is the position of the spinal column. If the spinal column is not alert, the fruit of the pranayama practice cannot be experienced. Our sessions will focus on how to work with our body to establish an alert spinal column, both in the reclining and sitting pranayamas.

This December series held via Zoom will focus on the transition from lying to sitting pranayama. We will look at specific techniques for reclining pranayama that are incredibly effective, but rarely taught in public classes. And, we will look at sitting options including the use of the wall and the chair. You will receive valuable guidance on seated Ujjayi and Viloma, specifically Ujjayi V – VIII and Viloma IV – VI.
